Here’s an interesting look at recent trading events and advice for those interested in the market.

As the author writes: “The truth is that companies that pay dividends actually believe in their earnings. If a company does not pay dividends, then they are usually uncertain about the volatility of their earnings or they believe that it is best to invest their cash in expansion plans or in buying back their own shares. Unfortunately, companies are usually horrible at timing share buybacks and can be terrible with acquisition plans (Time Warner/AOL?). This is not to say that the home runs do not exist, just that they are incredibly hard to find and growth projections are terribly difficult to estimate.”

Certainly, this advice and these graphs are interesting information for professional investors like Gregg Hymowitz of EnTrust Capital or for the individual who is looking to invest.

Lower School art teacher, Deborah Sherman, will be exhibiting two of her landscape paintings (one pictured left) from August 3rd through 24th at the Blue Mountain Gallery.

These paintings come as a result of her two week art residency this summer at La Macina di San Cresci in Chianti, Italy.

The opening reception was on August 5th from 5-8 pm and Deborah was certainly pleased to invite all Riverdale community members to attend.

This blog post offers an interesting piece of advice for filtering the noise, as he puts it, in the stock market. Seasoned investors and financial experts like Gregg Hymowitz of EnTrust Capital are well aware of the many factors that influence their investing decisions. The rest of us may not be quite so astute in this area.

Here the author explains, “It is not hard to learn to recognize profitable setups. The biggest obstacle for the average investor/trader is the huge disparity between knowing and applying that knowledge in the heat of the moment. This concept is called an empathy gap – the difference between how we believe we will act in a future moment and how we actually act when the moment comes. We make our plans, we pledge to stick to them, but when the time comes we often forget about our intentions and we get lost in the craziness of market jungle. You can’t imagine how often I have caught myself thinking about pursuing a trade that doesn’t meet the requirements of the setups where I have an edge. Sometimes I manage to catch myself. Sometimes I don’t.”

Read on to find out more about silencing the noise and hearing what you need to for your investments.

Recent news is that Kenneth Mack earned an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

The annual Knicks Poetry Slam is made possible because of the generous contributions of its many sponsors. Over 10,000 students are touched each year by this program, which encourages students to learn to express themselves through poetry and hip-hop while also teaching them about their college options. Overall, the Knicks Poetry Slam offers over $350,000 in college grants and prizes.

Sponsors of the Knicks Poetry Slam include the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Urban Word NYC, The Hymowitz Children’s Education Foundation, Inc. with Gregg Hymowitz and many others.

One interesting sponsor is Mercy College. Mercy College is a four year, private university that was founded by the Sisters of Mercy as a junior college in 1950. Some unique characteristics of this institution include that it is Middle States accredited, it is an Hispanic-serving institution, and it is designated as a Department of Veteran Affairs “Yellow-Ribbon” School.

Thomas O’Brien, the director of Binghamton’s Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education recently published his book, Brain-Powered Science: Teaching and Learning with Discrepant Events. Written for science teachers and for educators who train them, the book contains a large number of demonstrations that will engage and shock students. He hopes, through these demonstrations, to change how students and teachers think about science.

One high school chemistry teacher, Janice Crowley, said about the book, “What makes it exceptional,” she said, “is that it breaks away from the typical text and uses lab activities that get our kids hooked on science.”
This is yet another example of the exceptional learning and teaching taking place at Binghamton University, where EnTrust Capital Managing Partner Gregg Hymowitz graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A.
